Jephthah:i.e.one of the “judges” or generals ofancient Israel,whose story is given in the Bible ( Judges 11).He vowed before battle that if victorious hewould sacrifice the first living creature that came tomeet him on his return. Then it was his daughter whocame to meet him. He kept his vow and she becamethe victim. Before she died. she bewailed her virgini-ty.
