Jephthah:i.e.one of the “judges” or generals ofancient Israel,whose story is given in the Bible ( Judges 11).He vowed before battle that if victorious hewould sacrifice the first living creature that came tomeet him on his return. Then it was his daughter whocame to meet him. He kept his vow and she becamethe victim. Before she died. she bewailed her virgini-ty. Jephthah was the subject of a ballad from whichHamlet quotes耶弗他，古以色列的“士師”或?qū)④姡瑸檑`誓言，殺女作為燔祭犧牲。
